Virginia: FBI Arrests One of their Translators for Lying about his Relationship with Target of Investigation

FBI logoI’m laughing as I write this because what ever made the FBI think they could trust a translator who is Somali to help surveil a fellow Somali.
But, then again, this is an Obama-era FBI pick. Let’s hope the Trump FBI is wiser and smarter.
The bare bones news about the “Virginia man” is here at the US Justice Department website (hat tip: Cathy), but believe it or not, I see that CNN has excellent coverage in my quick look around at which media outlets were onto the story.

CNN yesterday:

Former FBI translator charged with lying about contacts with subject of terror investigation

Washington (CNN)Federal prosecutors charged a former FBI translator with lying about contacts with the subject of a terror investigation, the Justice Department announced Monday.
Abdirizak Haji Raghe Wehelie, 66, of St. Burk, Virginia, was arrested on Saturday, authorities said, and appeared before a federal magistrate judge Monday afternoon. Prosecutors did not seek Wehelie’s detention at his hearing and he was placed on a $20,000 bond ahead of an arraignment set for May 24, according to the court docket.

CAIR’s friend Wehelie (left) with wife and son Yusuf in 2010.  “His son, Yusuf Wehelie, is already serving 10 years in prison for transporting weapons in a case where he is said to have spoken with an undercover witness about his desire to shoot up a military recruitment center on behalf of the Islamic State group. ”

Wehelie faces seven charges of making false statements to investigators and one for obstructing a federal investigation, the indictment said, and he faces up to 25 years in prison. An attorney for Wehelie was not immediately listed.
Wehelie worked for a government contractor and was assigned to be an FBI linguist and translator from 2012 through 2015,according to the indictment, which was filed last December and unveiled on Monday.
Prosecutors alleged that Wehelie translated a voicemail message from an individual under surveillance and concealed that it was his own voice in the audio he translated. The indictment unsealed on Monday did not allege Wehelie provided material support to those under terrorism investigation.
The indictment said in 2012, he translated a message captured through surveillance of a subject referred to as “Person A,” which Person A left on Wehelie’s own device.

Secret decoder ring tip-off to Somali ethnicity….

Person A, according to prosecutors, was suspected of “having conspired with and aided and abetted” someone who traveled to Somalia to join Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda-affiliated terror group. The latter person was on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists List, according to the indictment.
When interviewed in 2016, Wehelie told FBI agents he was “surprised” that the person was a surveillance target, but he admitted in the interview he was aware of an FBI search of the person’s home weeks prior to the voicemail. Wehelie, according to the indictment, made statements to the FBI about his handling of the translation and his relationship with the surveillance subject that were not true.

The indictment said Wehelie told the FBI he did not know the person “very well,” but the FBI’s investigation “revealed that there were 179 unique telephone contacts between Wehelie and Person A between July 2010 and September 2017” and that Wehelie was seen spending time with the person at least three times.

In a later interview, Wehelie “admitted that he and Person A’s father were very close and that he has known Person A since Person A was young.”
“Wehelie said that Person A regarded Wehelie as an uncle,” the indictment said.

More here.

Maybe someone should consider writing a blog and calling it ‘New American Somali Watch!’

(That is not a joke!)

    1. I don’t know, do any other readers have further information?

  1. This is the same FBI that hired a Lebanese woman, and promoted to supervisory special agent. Later, after a fraudulent marriage ring was busted in Michigan, it was discovered this FBI supervisor was a beneficiary of one of the phony marriages. This was how she received her initial green card, through a fraud marriage to an American.
She later became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
I guess the FBI only did a background check to her immigration file, finding she had immigrated. They never went further to see who the husband was, and how the marriage ended in divorce, soon after she got her coveted green card.

  2. Obama put Muslims in the federal government to use against Americans. Now why would he that.

  3. Just finished the article. Very good. People don’t read the article because they actually believe your headline and/or have read about it elsewhere…is my take at least on this.

    1. LOL! So I’m thinking it would be really easy to just write headlines and then put a link to the article! Sure would free up more of my time!
