Amazon workers in Minnesota walk out in protest over part-time work
A day after The Verge reported on Sacramento Amazon workers protesting Amazon’s strict time-off rules, more than 60 Amazon workers in similar roles in an Eagan, Minnesota, warehouse walked off the job.During the two-and-a-half-hour protest, workers demanded the lifting of the 30-hour-per-week cap, a more respectful work environment, and a less strenuous workload.
The Sacramento and Eagan employees work in Amazon delivery stations, which are smaller warehouses that sort packages for delivery routes. Delivery stations are staffed almost entirely by part-time employees who receive no medical insurance and can be fired for taking more than 20 hours off without pay per quarter.
“We are not allowed to work more than 30 hours per week, even though there’s more work,” said a worker in a video of the walkout posted by Workday Minnesota. Amazon would be required to offer employees who work more than 30 hours a week medical insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The worker went on to say that they must lift heavy boxes and take time off without pay if they get injured. “We have no value here, they treat us like we are not human.” [Golly! Was Obamacare just a way to let the big guys like Amazon avoid paying medical insurance?—ed]
Nimo Omar, an organizer with the Awood Center, a nonprofit focused on East African workers that has been active in organizing Minnesota Amazon employees, attended last night’s walkout. Omar said the workers demanded a more respectful work environment and complained of heavy workloads and close monitoring, including managers knocking on the door if they spent more than several minutes in the bathroom.Like the Sacramento workers, they also felt Amazon’s unpaid time-off policy was inflexible and demanded the option to work more than 30 hours a week.

The Eagan delivery center and nearby fulfillment center in Shakopee, Minnesota, have emerged as hotbeds of worker activism within Amazon’s distribution system.Many of the workers are Muslim immigrants from Somalia and elsewhere in East Africa, and in the summer of 2018, they began protesting that the pace of work and time-off system made it difficult to observe Ramadan. Amazon met with the organizers, but workers say the company didn’t address their concerns. They staged a strike during Prime Day this year over the increasing pace of work and other issues.

Before the Eagan workers walked out, the Awood Center posted a message to Facebook saying workers in Minnesota were dealing with the same issues as those in Sacramento.
Shortly after 9PM, more than 60 workers walked off the job. According to the Awood Center, the employees agreed to return to work two and a half hours later when the manager on site agreed to talk to his boss about their demands.
The Awood Center said in a Facebook post that all truck deliveries for the night were canceled due to the backlog created by the walkout.
Will Amazon eventually cave to demands? We will be watching!

Here (below) is the basic news reported by Fox. I searched around to see if any news outlet was telling the public which students were responsible for the gang violence and found no description of the students or reason for the brawl that brought 20 police officers to the school. (Update when someone reports the facts!)

Large police presence at Tech High when fights broke out on September 25th. The brand new high school had recently opened.
Charges expected for all 19 students involved in fight at St. Cloud high school
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (FOX 9) – Officials in St. Cloud, Minnesota said they’ve learned more about the large fight that broke out last Wednesday at St. Cloud Technical High School. [LOL! But they sure aren’t telling the public everything they know!—ed]
According to police, the fight appears to have started between two 16-year-old boys who had an issue with each other from a previous fight that occurred off school grounds.
The two boys – each accompanied by numerous friends – engaged in a mutual fight in a hallway in the school. This initial fight led to three more fights within a 10-minute period, involving the same students, all taking place at various different hallway locations. The number of students fighting grew as the friends now started to mutually and willingly fight each other. None of the altercations took place in any of the classrooms.
A St. Cloud police officer assigned to the school as a school resource officer was on scene and responded immediately, but multiple officers were sent to the school due to the number of individuals fighting. St. Cloud Tech was placed on lockdown by administrators as the school took security actions. In all, 20 police officers responded to the incident.
Three staff members received minor injuries while trying to stop the fights.
During the investigation, officers learned that a pocket knife had been displayed by one of the students during the fight. However, no one was injured by the knife. This student was one of the originally detained students and will be charged.
So far, 19 students have been identified as taking part in the fight, and charges are pending on each student.
Administration said none of the students involved in the incident will be returning to the school this school year, and serious disciplinary action up to and including expulsion will be considered for all involved.
I would like to update this post as soon as someone reports who was fighting and why! Was it “ethnic tension” again?

The Minneapolis man is a Somali ‘new American’*** who requested an interpreter for his court date indicating that he is a relatively new refugee.
The story (published last week) reports on some news that is a few months old, so this might not be the first time you are learning about it.

Minneapolis Man Charged with Sexual Assault of 14-Year-Old He Met Online

A north Minneapolis man is accused of strangling and threatening to stab a 14-year-old girl and punching her in the face several times before sexually assaulting her in April, according to a Hennepin County criminal complaint.
Abdifetah Ali Kalif, 18
The incident reportedly happened after 8 p.m. on April 21, 2019, after the victim said she was picked up at a friend’s house in south Minneapolis by a male she met online and another individual who was driving the vehicle.
The man, later identified as Abdifetah Ali Kalif, 18, climbed into the back seat after the vehicle drove away and began pulling away the clothing of the girl who said that Kalif grabbed her by the throat and pulled out a knife and threatened to stab her.
The girl said she became afraid and thought she was going to die so she stopped fighting back. The girl said that when Kalif was not able to achieve sexual penetration he became angry and punched her several times in the face and then forced her to perform oral sex on him. She said that they drove in the area of northeast Minneapolis before the driver brought her back to her friend’s apartment, the complaint said. [What is wrong with these dumb girls thinking that African immigrants they meet on-line are going to treat them well?—ed]
Deep trouble for Kalif! Looks like he admitted guilt.
Kalif was arrested on June 25 and in a post-Miranda statement to law enforcement admitted that he’d picked up the victim and that he hit her because she “wasted his time and lied to him,” the complaint said. Kalif acknowledged that the victim tried to get out of the car, so he locked the doors and hit her. Police showed Kalif a picture of the girl with the injures she reported from the assault, and he acknowledged that she was the girl he hit but denied causing her injuries. Kalif also stated that he did not initially meet the girl to have sex, but that he did tell her to give him oral sex, and that after he “smacked” her and she complied.

Kalif, who’s address is listed in the complaint as a Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) residence on the 1500 block of Girard Avenue North, had a motion hearing last week and was again ordered conditionally released by Judge Nicole A. Engisch. Kalif is not currently listed in custody in Hennepin County and is scheduled to appear at another motion hearing on Oct. 15.

Juveniles described as Somali teens crash stolen car
Just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday, police were dispatched to a report of a crash near Peavey Park in south Minneapolis.
Recorded dispatch audio from the incident indicated that the vehicle had previously been reported as stolen and that a witness had seen the driver of the vehicle flee from the scene of the crash, described as a Somali male teen, age 14-15in a blue hoodie and green and black striped pants. Police located the crashed vehicle in a driveway near the pool at Peavey Park near the intersection of East 22nd Street and Chicago Avenue South.
A Minneapolis Crime Watch Facebook page also posted that police were setting up setting up a perimeter in the area to search for the suspects who fled from the vehicle.
Another portion of dispatch audio captured the search for the suspects and the eventual apprehension of the alleged driver of the vehicle and possibly two others who were involved. The driver was positively identified by a witness, according to the audio.
Auto thefts are up in Minneapolis….
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) said that auto thefts are up in Minneapolis by 22 percent over last year, according to a report earlier this month. The MPD’s Crime Data Dashboard shows a total of 1720 vehicle thefts through Aug. 23 of this year, with 555 of those occurring in the 3rd Precinct, where Wednesday’s crash occurred. The precinct had 368 vehicle thefts over the same period last year, according to the Dashboard, which indicates over a 50 percent increase in vehicle thefts for that precinct over last year.
Those apprehended are juveniles, so this is likely the first and last report you will see on the case.

American Airlines mechanic in Miami charged with sabotaging plane. It aborted takeoff.
An American Airlines mechanic was arrested Thursday on a sabotage charge accusing him of disabling a navigation system on a flight with 150 people aboard before it was scheduled to take off from Miami International Airport earlier this summer.
The reason, according to a criminal complaint affidavit filed in Miami federal court: Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, a veteran employee, was upset over stalled union contract negotiations.
None of the passengers and crew on the flight to Nassau were injured because the tampering with the so-called air data module caused an error alert as the pilots powered up the plane’s engines on the runway July 17, according to a criminal complaint affidavit filed in Miami federal court.
As a result, flight No. 2834 was aborted and taken out of service for routine maintenance at America’s hangar at MIA, which is when the tampering with the ADM system was discovered during an inspection. An AA mechanic found a loosely connected tube in front of the nose gear underneath the cockpit that had been deliberately obstructed with some sort of hard foam material.
Alani is charged with “willfully damaging, destroying or disabling an aircraft” and is expected to have his first appearance in Miami federal court on Friday.
According to the complaint filed Thursday, Alani glued the foam inside the tube leading from outside the plane to its air data module, a system that reports aircraft speed, pitch and other critical flight data. As a result, if the plane had taken off that day from MIA, the pilots would have had to operate the aircraft manually because the ADM system would not have received any computer data.
After his arrest Thursday, the affidavit says that Alani told federal air marshals assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force that “his intention was not to cause harm to the aircraft or its passengers.”
He said that his motive in tampering with the navigational system was because he was “upset” over stalled contract negotiations between the mechanics’ union and American Airlines that has raged for months — that “the dispute had affected him financially.”
He further said he only tampered with the plane’s air data module “in order to cause a delay or have the flight canceled in anticipation of obtaining overtime work,” according to the affidavit.
